Your furniture upholstery might withstand quite a bit of wear and tear. However, everyday use can leave even the most durable of fabrics worn and dirty. Apply some basic, effective cleaning techniques, and you may keep your upholstery in optimal condition.
Know the Codes
The first step you should take is to examine the cleaning codes on the label. The label should be on a cushion or underneath the furniture itself. These are the codes and their meanings:
- W: Apply a water-based cleaning agent.
- O: The materials are organic, and you should use cold water.
- S: Use a solvent-based cleaner.
- SW: Either a water-based or solvent-based cleaning agent may be applied.
- X: Have the item professionally cleaned. You might gently brush and vacuum the piece as general maintenance.
W and O Codes
If your upholstery comes with a cleaning code of W, mix a few drops of mild dish soap mixed with lukewarm water. (If the code on the label is O, take the same steps as with code W, but with cold water). Gently brush the solution onto the entire surface with a soft-bristled brush. Then, wipe that area with a damp, clean cloth. Let the piece air dry overnight before you clean the other sides of the cushions. If the cushions are not removable, allow the piece to dry overnight before you use it again.
S Code
If your upholstery has an S code, you will need to purchase dry cleaning solvent. You can find this online, and you might also find it in a dry cleaning kit at the supermarket. Use a clean, dry towel to brush the solvent on the surface of the piece. You should focus primarily on cleaning dirty areas, and leave clean surface areas alone. Don't use the furniture until it has dried overnight.
SW Code
To clean upholstery with an SW code, you can use mild soap and lukewarm water or dry cleaning solvent. Try to use these cleaning agents only to spot clean dirty areas. You may need to have very dirty or stained upholstery professionally cleaned.
Pet hair, food crumbs, beverage spills, and other messes do not need to cause dismay for your household. Now, you can safely and effectively clean your upholstery. This will also reduce the need for frequent cleaning by a professional.
